World-Class
Canadian Athletes
Visit Fort Nelson Schools
Fort
Nelson, British Columbia - EnCana was pleased
to host two time Olympic Speed Skater, Steven
Elm and Canada’s first-ranked racquet
ball player, Lori-Jane Powell to one of
its BC communities Fort Nelson. The Olympians
visited three local schools in the region
to talk to the children about how important
it is to reach for the stars. These athletes
attested that when you put your mind, body
and spirit into a goal you can achieve excellence.
The
school assemblies were part of the Canadian
Sport Centre Calgary’s Youth
Education in Sport (Y.E.S.) program,
which is proudly sponsored by EnCana.
The Y.E.S. program promotes qualities
of self-esteem, respect, dedication, commitment
and belief in oneself, by providing athlete
role models as speakers in communities.

“At
EnCana we realize the potential of our communities.
Fort Nelson is becoming a true success story
for British Columbia’s new economy,”
says Mike Graham, EnCana’s Foothills
and Frontier Region President.
“It
is a fabulous opportunity to help develop
BC’s Heartlands so that natives
and non-natives alike do not have to leave
their traditional communities in order
to find long-term stable job opportunities,”
stated Graham. “The EnCana drilling
program is a nice fit with the BC government’s
intention to promote all season oil and
gas opportunities, revitalizing the economy
and creating new opportunities. The addition
of the summer program will strengthen
the community’s capacity to develop
long-term infrastructure keeping jobs
at home and promoting the local service
sector versus importing workers.”

“The
students these athletes are visiting with
really have the ability to make a positive
contribution to British Columbia and Canada
as a whole without having to leave home,”
says Graham. Along with the speaking engagements
at area schools, the athletes enjoyed a
lunch meeting with elected officials and
business leaders of the Fort Nelson community".
