The
Calgary Herald "Raise-a-Reader" campaign
is a unique project designed to increase awareness
and raise money for children's literacy programs
throughout Calgary.
This year the Calgary Herald and Global Television
were delighted to join their CanWest colleagues
to raise money and awareness for children's literacy
in southern Alberta.
The
premise behind Raise-a-Reader is simple: if children
know how to read, it helps ensure their success
as adults. The higher someone's literacy level,
the more likely that person is to be employed
and have a higher income. Plus as parents, aunts
and uncles the world over know, a child discovering
the joy of reading is one of life's great pleasures.
This year The Calgary Herald Raise
a Reader Campaign took place on Thursday,
September 25th. Many local Olympians and National
Team athletes volunteered their time to stand
on busy street corners early in the morning to
help exchange newspapers for donations to the
cause.
Some
of the athletes that donated their time include:
Catriona
Le May Doan, Speed Skating double Olympic
gold medallist
Jeff Pain - Skeleton Olympian
and current world champion
Alanna Kraus - Short Track Speed
