ATHLETE RESULTS

TUCK WINS FIRST GOLD MEDAL AT CANADA GAMES

LONDON, ON--Alberta cyclist Carrie Tuck became the first gold medallist of the 2001 Canada Summer Games last Monday, less than a year after breaking her hip in a bike accident.

The Crowsnest Pass rider's time of 22 minutes 7.46 seconds in the individual time trial stood up after she was second out of the starting block. "It's unexplainable how I feel, I'm just so elated," Tuck said. "This was my goal for the last two years and I did it, I finally reached it."

Many other athletes that train in Calgary reached the podium during the first week of competition at these games.

MEDELLIN, Colombia--Steen Madsen (2001 National Sprint Champion) started from mid way down the start list, and blazed to a new track record of 10.648 in the opening round of the men's sprint tournament at the Pan American Championships in Medellin, Colombia on Monday.

Doug Baron

Doug Baron posted his fastest time of the year, taking second spot in a very close three-way battle for second position with a time of 10.743. Lars Madsen also posted his fastest time of the year, a 10.877, and ended up in 5th position.

Monday night is the men's 1000 m time trial where Jim Fisher (CAN) will attempt to regain the Pan American title he won at the Pan American Championships in 2000. Also on the schedule are the men's 1st round sprints.

CANADIAN CREWS PERFORM AT ROWING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

LUCERNE, Switz--Canada held its own on Sunday, the first day of racing, at the FISA World Rowing Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. The first Canadian crew to race was the lightweight men's eight - finishing third in its heat.

France won in 5:42:10 to advance directly to the final, followed by Italy in 5:44:37 and Canada in 5:46:24

"Today was a good test for the crew," said Joe Dowd of St. Catharines, Ont., coach of the lightweight men's eight. "It was the first race of the season (for this crew) and an important step in establishing confidence. This group will get stronger with each race."

The lightweight eight is Rob Henson of St. Catharines, Ont. (cox), Doug Vandor of Dewittville, Que., Jon Beare of Toronto, Ont., Michael Simonson of Calgary, Alta., Erik Oinonen of Thunder Bay, Ont., Matt McCarthy of Peterborough, Ont., Brent Borbridge of Winnipeg, Man., Pat Cody of Halifax, N.S. and Rob Park of North Gower, Ont.

The heavyweight women's eight, which includes Marilyn Taylor of Calgary and Pauline Van Roessel of Edmonton, placed third in their heat on Tuesday behind Great Britain and Germany, while the heavyweight men's eight finished fourth in their heat. Andrew Hoskins of Edmonton is a member of that crew.

MEN'S JUNIOR WATER POLO TEAM FINISHES 13TH AT JUNIOR WORLDS

ISTANBUL,Turkey--Canada completed the men's World Junior Water Polo Championships with an 8-4 win against Brazil and a 9-6 loss to Turkey to conclude the tournament in 13th place.

The Canadians were relegated to the 13th to 16th spot grouping and placed second in that group. But Yugoslavia was disqualified which allowed many teams, including Canada, to climb one spot. The Yugoslavians were disqualified after all their team members jumped in the water on Friday to brawl the Croatians who were on their way to victory with seconds left in the match.

The Croats, who still shook hands with the Yugoslavians after the match, defeated the Italians in the semifinal and lost to Greece in the final. Greece therefore won the gold, Croatia the silver and Hungary the bronze.

For Canada, which won three matches and lost six during the tournament, it was a disappointing result. "I truly believe we did not play as well as we should have," said Canadian team manager Leventy Mady. "Our team had the potential to go far. The majority of the players will soon be seniors, I hope they continue their water polo careers because the experience acquired here will help them become excellent players."

The Canadians return home Tuesday.

CANADIANS LOSE TO AUSTRALIA IN PRE-WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES BASKETBALL COMPETITION

Toronto, ON--The Canadian student women's basketball team was defeated, 66-55, by the Victoria Club team from Australia in pre-World University Games (FISU) competition in China on Thursday.

Leighann Doan

Canada fell behind 19-8 after the first quarter. Although the remaining three quarters were played evenly, Canada could not close the gap. The score at halftime was 34-24. The high scorer for Canada was Lindsay Anderson (Victoria, BC) with 15 points. Erin Soroko (Winnipeg, MB) finished the game with a double-double scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 boards. Leighann Doan (Halkirk, AB) recorded 10 points and nine rebounds.

"We were able to move our shot selection beyond the three-point line in this game," said head coach Christine Stapleton.

"We had a good shooting percentage from behind the arc today and that will bode well for the start of the FISU Games."

This was the final tune-up game before the start of the FISU Games. Canada will play their opening game on August 22 against Japan.

MEN'S WATER POLO TEAM LEAVES FOR FISU GAMES

CALGARY, AB--The water polo team which will represent Canada at the 21st World University Games left for Beijing on Saturday. The young national senior team will form the nucleus of the squad.

Canada was eighth at the 1999 Games in Palma de Mallorca and hopes to crack the top-eight once again. However they are being realistic. "Our team is young and in order to respect the FISU (the international federation for university sports) age limits, important players such as Mikael Sabo and Kent Hardisty will stay home," said Dr. Patrick Baillie, sports psychologist and team manager. "Yes we'd like to do better than in 1999 but for most of our players it'll be a tournament to gain some experience."

In its preliminary round group Canada will face Spain, Brazil and the Netherlands on August 23-24-25.

ALPINE SKI TEAM ENJOYS TRAINING CAMP IN FERNIE BEFORE HEADING SOUTH
(Report by Dryland coach, Dave Ellis)

The Canadian Alpine Ski Team (CAST) wrapped up another block of dryland training in late July by spending a few days in Fernie, BC, home town of skier Emily Brydon, who said that, "Fernie is a great place to train with all the trails and hiking etc. right outside your door."

The team made their presence known in the town with four days of training, including: mountain biking, hiking, running, and even a little golfing and rafting. The team spent approximately 6 hours per day training in Fernie, and ended the week with a 4 hour hike up to the top of the local ski resort.

The team had a great time in Fernie moving the training outdoors and many are enthusiastic to head back next year. Kelly Vanderbeek, summarized it best by saying, "I had a really good time, No, I had a great time!"

Others were impressed by the way mountain biking had many parallels to ski racing - by pushing the athletes outside their comfort zones as well as making them aware of body positioning and picking the right "line".

A special thanks to the community of Fernie for all their support and in particular to the following businesses and individuals: Snow Creek Lodge, Lizard Creek Lodge, Kelsey's, Rip N' Richards, Steve Kite, Mountainhigh Rafting Adventures, Fernie Golf and Country Club and Mike Delich.

The teams are now scheduled to round out their summer by heading to winter in the southern hemisphere, where they will train in New Zealand, Chile and Argentina.
