Youth Cycling Programs

Cycling Centre Calgary’s (CCC) youth program is divided into a series of programs: High Performance, Performance, Link, and Development. This program model is derived from the Cycling Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) a Sport Canada initiative that focuses on athlete development. Through the CCC youth programs young athletes start in the Development program and progress through to the Link and Performance programs and finally on to the High Performance Program. Through this series of programs we are able to provide age appropriate training to optimally prepare young athletes. In every program, training is designed to focus on developing the skills and fitness needed to be successful in cycling, while taking into account what is age appropriate for their stage of development. Athletes move from program to program over many years developing the necessary skills and fitness to become successful cyclists and hopefully future Olympians.

Cycling Development Program

The Cycling Development Program is open to kids (ages 10-14) of all abilities who share an interest in learning and developing cycling skills. Throughout this program we explore the fundamentals of sport, placing emphasize on continued fun, knowledge, fitness, and skill acquisition. The program works towards facilitating athletic growth and development in the following cycling disciplines: road, mountain bike, track, and cyclo cross. The program will also explore cross training in other sports such as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking, as well as other indoor activities (i.e. soccer, floor hockey, volleyball).

During the summer, the program shifts towards providing experience in local racing of all the disciplines. The Cycling Development Program is the first step in a young cyclist’s pathway and will feed into the newly formed “Link” program. The primary goal for the participants each year is participation at the Provincial Championships in each of the cycling disciplines.

Athletes take part in coached sessions and are required to have their own bike (MTB and road). The Olympic Oval National Cycling Centre will provide rollers for use during indoor training sessions. Athletes are also required to bring athletic shoes and clothing for strength and agility practices. Other equipment required includes: Bicycle Computer with Cadence, HR monitor, Tool Kit, Spare Tubes, Water Bottles, cycling clothing, helmet, gloves and Glasses.

History of the Development Program

The Development Program was formally created in 1999 after the merger between a triathlon training group and the Cycling Centre and has been an integral component in the Cycling Centre’s Programs over the past 13 years. Over this period of time many riders have participated in the program and in 2012 we had our first alumni attend the Olympic Games in London. Many other riders have gone on to ride professionally, for the National Team and some are also now starting careers as coaches in the sport.
