Para-Cycling

The Para-Cycling Programs are designed for individuals with drive and determination in good physical health, with one of the following impairments; Cerebral Palsy, brain injured, visually impaired, congenital or acquired amputees and spinal cord injured. Age and previous cycling experience are not a prerequisite as our program does not follow the typical athlete development model. We welcome mature athletes who can develop the skills required with dedication and commitment to the program.

The Para-Cycling Programs integrate athletes with the Club Racer, Development and Performance Cycling programs, giving all cyclists appropriate peer support in a fun, social atmosphere in a world class training facility. All participants are required to be a member in good standing of their provincial sport association (Alberta Amputee, Blind, Wheelchair or CP Sport Association). Participants will need an Alberta Bicycle Association membership/race license for the 2013 season.

History of the Para-Cycle Program

The Para Cycle Program started in 1998 and has over the past 15 years been an instrumental program producing athletes and staff for the National Team and Paralympic Games. This year 2 alumni will represent Canada at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. Brayden McDougall and Jaye Milley both got their start in cycling here and have progressed to be among the top riders in their division on the international stage.

Para-Cycle Performance Program

The Cycling Performance Program is open to motivated athletes with a physical disability who have experience in bike racing or other competitive athletic experience. Athletes in this program have mastered the fundamentals of cycling, and are beginning to specialize in specific cycling disciplines (road or track). The program works towards facilitating athletic growth and development in specific cycling disciplines, preparing athletes for competition in Alberta races.

Athletes take part in coached sessions and are required to have their own road bike, rollers (and/or trainer), and heart rate monitors. Athletes are also required to bring athletic shoes and clothing for strength and agility practices.
